About NAMI Dekalb, Inc.

Our Mission:

The mission of NAMI is to promote recovery and improve the quality of life for all who are afflicted by mental illness by providing support, education, and advocacy.

Who We Are

NAMI Dekalb is an affiliate of NAMI National and NAMI Georgia, providing mental health support, education, and resources and advocacu within the local community in Dekalb County.

NAMI, National Alliance on Mental Illness, is a grassroots organization created in 1979 to unify   hundreds of local groups of people who had banded together locally across the nation in the 1970’s  out of an urgent concern to address the many needs of individuals, families and communities affected by mental illness. Atlanta Friends of the Mentally Ill was one of those original grassroots groups.

In 1979, several leaders of these groups decided to create a national organization, which would reach local communities through state and local affiliates.  Local affiliates in each state were to carry out the grassroots efforts to provide the support, education and advocacy that was the creators’ goal, backed up by state and national NAMI organizations.  The Georgia Alliance for the Mentally Ill, formed in the mid 1980’s, and Atlanta Friends of the Mentally Ill became a part of NAMI, and NAMI DeKalb was formed using the name NAMI followed by DeKalb as was the designation plan for all local affiliates.  The NAMI logo, which is a circle with blades of grass in it, represents this grassroots origin as well as the continuing vital role of local communities in NAMI’s work.

NAMI National advocates on our behalf to promote favorable legislation before Congress.  It also provides training of state leaders who, in turn, train local teachers and facilitators for our many classes and support groups.  NAMI National also provides training guidelines for our many other programs as well as offering a wealth on information on its website and many other programs in support of the NAMI mission.  See NAMI.org.  The state organization, NAMI Georgia, advocates on our behalf before the state legislature as well as providing innumerable logistical and practical support for our local efforts. Classes, support groups and many other resources provided by NAMI are free and classes and support groups are, at the present time, mostly held virtually.
